The Satellite Observatory of the Space Radio-Diagnostics Research Centre at the University of Warmia and Mazury (UWM) in Olsztyn, located in Lamkówko, was established in 1978. It was created by relocating the Artificial Satellite Tracking Station No. 1151 from the UWM campus (formerly the Agricultural and Technical Academy and the Higher School of Agriculture). This station had operated within the framework of the Committee on Space Research (COSPAR). Between 1961 and 1978, it conducted observations of artificial Earth satellites. The founder and first head of the station was Prof. Lubomir Włodzimierz Baran, Ph.D., D.Sc.
- 1961 – Establishment of the observatory as a station for visual observation of artificial Earth satellites – COSPAR 1151,
- 1961 – 1978 – Continuous visual observations as part of the ephemeris service, and from 1964, participation in international programs studying the upper layers of the Earth’s atmosphere (INTROBS, EUROBS, ATMOSPHERE),
- 1978 – Relocation of the observatory to the village of Lamkówko and initiation of photogrammetric observations using the installed AFU-75 camera within the ATMOSPHERE and PHOTODOPPLER international programs coordinated by INTERCOSMOS,
- lata 80 – Doppler observations for geodynamic research,
- 1991 – Acquisition of the first GPS receiver (ASHTECH M-XII) and the beginning of satellite tracking within the GPS/GNSS system.
