The ongoing modernization of the LOFAR system has been accompanied by efforts to change the legal structure of the entity responsible for managing the operation and development of LOFAR. Following consultations with representatives of research funding agencies from the countries involved in LOFAR, the ILT Foundation’s Board decided to replace the ILT Foundation (established under Dutch law) with a European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC). This transition was formalized by Implementing Decision (EU) 2023/2881 of the European Commission, issued on 20 December 2023, which established the Low Frequency Array European Research Infrastructure Consortium (LOFAR ERIC). Poland is one of the six founding member states of LOFAR ERIC. ERIC is the most commonly adopted legal form for new research infrastructures being developed in Europe.
Poland’s representatives in the LOFAR ERIC Council are: prof. Andrzej Krankowski – Scientific Representative (University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn) and dr. Dariusz Drewniak – Government Representative (Ministry of Science and Higher Education).
