The construction of the LOFAR PL-612 station officially began in 2014, when the site—owned by the University of Warmia and Mazury (UWM)—was first prepared for the station’s components.
The assembly and installation of the station elements started in June 2015. LOFAR PL-612 was the first LOFAR station where the decision was made to assemble and test the components directly on-site during construction. The station was launched in August 2015, with the first radio astronomical observation (“first light”) taking place on August 21, 2015.
The LOFAR PL-612 station in Bałdy was the first LOFAR station to be commissioned in Poland.
Following a test phase, the station was incorporated into regular radio astronomical observations within the International LOFAR Telescope (ILT) network, currently LOFAR ERIC, at the beginning of January 2016.
